Gramma’s House is one of six ministries described in the by-laws of In His Hand Ministries, Inc. A link to the ministry website will be provided here as soon as it is available.
The primary purpose of Grammas’ Guide to the Universe is to share the vision for our Gramma’s House ministry. We want to connect with women who believe that homemaking is a high calling from God, and we welcome the participation of women around the world. However, we especially want to meet our neighbors and build a community network to serve the people of Appalachia.
The inspiration for Gramma’s House comes from a once-common experience in our rural Appalachian communities. Whenever children build homes on large family properties or to buy houses close to their parents, Gramma’s house most often becomes the place where everyone gathers, on Sundays, on holidays, after school and on warm summer evenings. Every day throughout the year, Gramma’s house is a place where everyone finds love and acceptance, comfort and food, counsel and correction.
Now with so many extended families scattered across great distances, Gramma seldom lives next door. Siblings seldom live in the village where they can provide mutual support with their children. Grown children seldom live close enough to daily offer aid to aging parents. The extended family support system may no longer be available, but people–children, adults, the elderly–all still have the same basic needs. That’s why the vision of Gramma’s House came into focus. Gramma, wearing her apron, is a fitting metaphor for the church as she serves the community with love throughout the weekdays, and as such she is the ultimate homemaker.
The ministry of Gramma’s House is not about creating more programs for the church–we have more than enough of those. Rather it’s about finding ways to serve and support each other through the routine activities of our lives. It’s about the members of the body of Christ reaching into the community with His light and love. It’s more about where we live during six days of the week than where we gather to worship on one.
Gramma’s House–A place to nourish the body, soul, and spirit!
Our mission is to help make every home a holy, happy, healthy, haven of hospitality.
Our vision is to return homemaking to the top of the list of honorable careers.
Gramma’s House is a ministry following the instructions in Titus 2 for the older women to teach the younger women:
At Gramma’s House the older women would be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things. They would admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers and good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed–Titus 2:3-5
In our busy lives, too often the art of homemaking is devalued, neglected or pushed out by other things that demand our time and attention. In today’s culture many young women do not have the opportunity to be mentored by women gifted in homemaking skills. We hope to see cooking, eating, laundry, cleaning, sewing, mending, and gardening become continuous opportunities to glorify God as we learn and grow together as women. Gramma’s House is a place where prayer, Bible study, worship, peacemaking, evangelism, and counseling are woven into all the things we must do to simply live life.
